How to Find the Right Tattoo Artist in Tokyo for Your Trip

2026/10/25

Open Instagram looking for a tattoo artist in Tokyo and you will find plenty of beautiful work. But will that artist take on the design you want? Can you book them during your trip? How much should you budget? The photos alone don't answer any of that.

At Tattoo Tour Tokyo, we interview tattooed people on the street and have talked one-on-one with more than 50 tattoo artists. One thing we have learned: finding a popular artist and finding the right artist for you are not the same. Even artists who are fully booked are sometimes not getting to tattoo the designs they really want to make.

1. Is it the motif you love, or the way it's drawn?

The same flower looks completely different in fine line, in bold black shapes, or in photo-like realism. Some realism artists are best known for one specific texture, such as metal or glass. Ask yourself what you actually love: the subject, or the line weight, color, composition, and use of empty space. Once you can put it into words, your conversation with an artist becomes much more concrete.

2. Decide between "leave it to the artist" and "bring your own idea"

One person we interviewed had always left their designs completely up to the artist. For their next large piece, they were sketching the mood themselves and adding a little of their own idea. If you want to leave the design to the artist, choose someone whose work and way of thinking you connect with. If you want to bring your own idea, choose someone who will develop it with you.

3. Share your dates and size first

Send the city you are staying in, your travel dates, and the days you could get tattooed, together with size, placement, budget, and the language you want to use. Large or complex designs may need more than one session, so ask early whether yours can be finished during your stay. Don't plan an onsen or pool visit for the day of your tattoo.

4. Before you pay a deposit

A reply is not the same as a confirmed booking. Make sure you know who will tattoo you, where and when, the total price, the deposit, and the rules for changes and cancellations. Only pay through the artist's or studio's official contact.

5. Your first message (in English)

Hi! I'll be in Tokyo from [date] to [date]. I really like your work, especially [style or piece]. I'm hoping for a tattoo around [size] on my [placement], with a budget of about ¥[amount]. Would you be available during my visit? Could you share an estimated price and your booking conditions?

When the style fits, the dates work, and the booking terms feel right, a travel memory becomes a lifelong piece.
