The Itoman Great Tug-of-War is a religious event praying for a good harvest, abundant catch, family safety, and good health. It celebrates the harvest through the joining of the male and female ropes divided north and south, predicting good or bad fortune based on the outcome of the match🔮✨

The length of the rope is about 180 meters, making it one of the largest in the prefecture✨ While tug-of-war events in other regions are held on public holidays and have become tourist attractions, Itoman traditionally holds it every year on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar‼️

The rope used for the tug-of-war is made starting two weeks in advance. First, small ropes are created in each of the 10 districts in Itoman. Then, from 8:30 AM on the day of the event, traffic will be regulated between Route 256, Shirogindo, and Itoman Rotary, where the small ropes will be combined to create the large rope.

After the rope-making, a parade called "Michi Zune" will begin at 2 PM. Michi Zune features over 1,000 citizens participating, led by flag bearers with "Yugafuu" and "Kariyushi" written on them, showcasing dances and songs to the spectators along the route as they march approximately 1 kilometer from Itoman Elementary School to Shirogindo.

Then, at 5 PM, the tug-of-war will finally begin. Young men dressed as legendary figures from Itoman will appear carried on a board from both the north and south camps. They will face each other at the center of the rope, heightening the spirit of their respective camps. Once the staring contest is over, the actual tug-of-war will commence.

Even those who are not residents of Itoman can participate in the tug-of-war🙌

There are no complicated participation procedures, and it is open to everyone🎵
