The predecessor of Yasaka Shrine, known as "Gozu Tenno Shrine (牛頭天王社) / commonly referred to as Tenno Shrine", has been revered by the people of Tago Town as a guardian deity against illness since before the feudal era. In the Meiji period, Tenno Shrine was renamed to the current Yasaka Shrine. Every June, a grand festival is held, and Tago Kagura is dedicated. Tago Kagura is a Yamabushi Kagura that has been passed down for about 400 years and is designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Aomori Prefecture.
